Alison Varley
Trained at Brighton Art College and the Royal College of Art Alison set up her studio workshop in Norfolk in 1980. Her work has been shown widely in galleries and exhibitions in London and across the country. Initially specialising in techniques of metal inlay she now works primarily in silver and gold with an emphasis on exploring many different characteristics that can be found within the metals and their juxtaposition. The use of strong lines and contrasting textures is a feature of her work. She is happy to work to commission both large and small and to discuss design ideas within the framework of her style. Her most recent major commission was to make a carved and engraved finial in silver and gold in the form of the Norfolk Coat of Arms for the top of the Under Sheriff of Norfolk's wand.

Anne‑Marie Wills‑Wilson
I am a self-taught pet and wildlife artist living in the beautiful North Norfolk countryside totally surrounded by the wildlife that I adore. I've always been dotty about animals and, over the years, have been owned by lots of pets: dogs, cats, budgies, rabbits, mice, chickens, horses and even the odd frog or two!! When I work I pay a lot of attention to fine detail which gives a natural and lifelike appearance to my portraits. The greatest compliment that I can receive about my art is if someone says that they can almost hear the animal breathing or that the fur looks so real that they want to run their fingers through it. I don't just want to paint a beautiful animal, I also want to capture its personality too. Each portrait takes many hours of work and I use the highest quality pastel pencils, soft pastel sticks, pan pastels and paper to achieve the best results.

Chris Haywood
I am a wildlife artist based in the mid-Norfolk countryside. My work reflects a long-standing interest in all aspects of the natural world. I aim to capture the unique character and personality of my subject, either in watercolour or coloured pencil. Working in high detail I use many layers to achieve a vibrancy of colour and transparency that allows other colours to show through. Another area of my work that I particularly enjoy is designing and printing greetings cards from my artwork. Please visit my website to see more of my work.

Claire Spencer
I found my love of ceramics after attending an evening class and, since then, I have never looked back! I create forms which are organic in shape as I work intuitively, allowing the vessel to develop as I work. I mainly coil build my ceramic vessels as this allows a freedom and expression in the shaping. I also make small thrown pieces. I incorporate images of nature such as trees, leaves and water, into my vessels by carving and cutting into the clay to leave an absence of the object. This symbolises our complex connection with nature, which we are constantly navigating to find a world in which both humans and nature can support one another.

I believe I was born with a pencil in my hand ñ for as long as I can remember I have drawn and painted. I come from an artistic/musical family: my brother sings; I paint; and our mother played several musical instruments. I am predominately left handed and proud of it. I have no formal training. I am inspired by the beautiful Glaven Valley where I live with my patterdale terrier Nib. Over the years I have been seen wandering the pathways and fields always with a dog or two at my heel. For me to draw is a need; my palm itches when I see something I want to draw or paint.

I have been painting for many years as an amateur, experimenting in many different mediums. Having lived in Lincolnshire for many years I was inspired by the fabulous skies, the dawns and sunsets. Watercolours were ideal for this, which I mainly concentrate on now. Now living in North Norfolk, I enjoy outdoor painting, the light and the charm as well as now experimenting with patterns. More of my work is on my website.

I started out working in the graphics industry mainly signage and then moved into print and designing logos for businesses. I was always more interested in using colour and texture in my work so I decided to pursue a career as an illustrator, mainly working on a series of educational books for HarperCollins publishers. Eventually, I needed something more fulfilling so I became an art teacher and have been working in Norfolk for the last twenty or so years. My work is usually based on architecture and ruins but I have been known to create an occasional portrait.

Jane Bygrave
Jane <b>Bygrave Jane has been an active potter for about thirty years, supplying local galleries and other retail outlets. Although Jane makes functional stoneware, she is especially fascinated by the drama and spontaneity of the Japanese Raku technique of ceramics, which represents a significant proportion of her decorative work. She currently concentrates on making small-batch production of tableware in stoneware and porcelain and creating individual pieces, taking inspiration from anything and everything around her - from textile surface design to the forms of ancient and contemporary ceramics and is especially influenced by the surrounding landscape and East Anglian coastline. Examples of more work can be seen on her website.

I am partially self taught but have also attended The Academy of Arts in Laren, The Netherlands, where I received tuition from the Dutch sculptor Jos Oosterhout. I have lived in Norfolk for three years and as I do not have the good fortune yet of owning my own studio I have gone back to working in clay and am experimenting with different medias as this enables me to work from home on the kitchen table! I am at present also experimenting in glazing. My real passion is sculpting in wood which somehow tend to be large pieces and mostly organic forms. I get my inspiration from the garden or by observation during my many nature walks. These I sculpt by hand as I feel I lose contact with the wood when using electric tools.

John Glyn Jones
John <b>Glyn Jones Several years ago a chance purchase of some computer software for paper craft design led me down the road of producing posters and cards - literally hundreds. To achieve unique designs I began to use my own art work. These days, I paint first, and then incorporate the paintings into my card/poster work. Initially, I experimented with oils and acrylics, but an old box of watercolours really excited (and frustrated) me. The range of mixable colours, together with the effect of transparency and soft/hard edges can be totally absorbing. Now, I try painting subjects which almost demand the use of these qualities, and the creation of shadow and depth in pictures.

I have always enjoyed art in various forms but it wasn't until I retired to North Norfolk that I was able to spend more time painting. The fantastic scenery in the area, particularly the beaches and skies, has inspired most of my pieces which are textured acrylics subtly combining mediums such as sand, twine and tissue paper. I also find mosaic composition extremely satisfying and facilitate local workshops.

I have always made something, ever since I was a child. I enjoy the freedom of flitting from one medium to another and love to try everything new. My passions are working with clay, felt and textiles and papier-mache but that may be because there's other things I haven't tried yet! I don't really have inspired ideas... I just have to fulfill urges which is why there never seems to be a thread to anything I do.

I graduated with a First Class degree in 2011 from Norwich University of the Arts. Since then I have exhibited widely in my home county of Norfolk as well as London and across the UK. I have been a finalist in the International Saatchi Drawing Showdown, featured in series 2 of the BBC 2 Programme 'Show Me the Monet' and was Visual Art Traderís Artist of the Month, they wrote of my work: 'The senses of emotional uncertainty, of time evaporating and of forgotten memories in Kirsty's drawings are made all the more powerful by the beautiful and precise execution of the images.' I have work in public and private collections in London, New York, the UK, the US, and the Middle East. My work is now far better travelled than I am.

Mike <b>Thody Since early childhood art and design have been part of my life. After retiring early from my career as a building surveyor, I chose to take a degree in fine art (painting and sculpture) at Hertfordshire University. In 2002 we moved to North Norfolk and I was lucky to have a garden studio to continue my work painting in oils, watercolour and pastels and making sculpture. In 2003 I started making sculpture in Holt Country Park using found materials and timber supplied by North Norfolk District Council. In 2008 I started a small charcoal drawing class in Hempstead at the village hall to inspire new artists. Having concentrated on watercolour painting inspired by North-Norfolk churches, country side, sea and boats for the last few years, my current work explores the use of charcoal and pastel.

Art has always been my strongest subject and, as a junior architectural technician, I developed a flair for producing 3D visualisations of clients' proposals. But the flair became dormant as my career moved through Planning, Property, and finally the Offshore Industry, where I invented, patented, and marketed a product for stabilising and protecting pipelines and cables on the sea bed. But after I had sold the business to Dunlop my wife became so ill that I had to stay at home to care for her. That was in 1988 and, between bouts of home care, I decided to see if I could make a name for myself as an artist. It took me three years to rise to the dizzy heights of getting one of my paintings accepted and sold by the Royal Society of Marine Artists; by which time my wife had sadly died, leaving me with little but my art for solace.

I am a Potter by inclination, but an engineer by training, from a family with a tradition of craftsmanship in wood and metal, though from an engineering rather than artistic perspective. My interest in hand-made ceramics goes back to childhood, having been introduced to the tradition during family holidays in Cornwall. I have been producing ceramics for over 20 years, currently from a private studio in West Beckham, Norfolk. My main interest is in functional stoneware, with the aim of producing usable pots that 'sit in the hand' and rely on form, texture and the gestural application of glazes rather than explicit decoration. My glazes are influenced by the Anglo-Japanese tradition, and are intended to reflect the changing effects of light on water, foliage and landscape by the use of deep glazes that are affected by ambient lighting. Since moving to Norfolk I have been using local materials, particularly ash from thatching reeds, investigating how these can be used in a way that replicates the chemistry involved in wood firing.

Roger <b>Tidman I owe much of my love of nature to my primary school teacher in the small Cambridgeshire village of Barrington, further encouraged by my supportive parents. Earliest Wildlife awards stemmed from this time, when at the age of nine I won the first of two silver medals for 'Bird and Tree' studies, a National Competition run by the RSPB. This must have fuelled my taste for success to the detriment of more formal learning, although I did manage a place at Aston University to study Ophthalmic Optics, a prelude to my earlier career as an Optometrist. Moving to Norfolk in 1979 I began the precarious alternative life of Wildlife Photography, a decision I've never regretted, although I did have to wait nearly two years for my first cheque! Since those early days, my work has been accepted by agents including Getty Images, FLPA and the RSPB. Extensive travel increased the variety of material and satisfied my wanderlust with such exotic destinations as Antarctica, China, India, Peru, Brazil, much of Africa and Europe, where Central Spain remains a favourite destination.

Su Summers
A retirement promise was to learn something new. It turned out to be more than one 'something', starting with learning to play the harp, and then by learning to work with glass. Both have been a challenge, but immensely satisfying. I love the natural world and my work in glass usually reflects this.

Sue Welfare
Sue <b>Welfare Norfolk Born, Iím a self-taught artist and printmaker living and working in Downham Market. After writing professionally for more than twenty-five years, around eight years I went on a morningís rag-rug workshop and rediscovered my love of colour, texture and design. Since then Iíve gone on to explore mosaics, glass, hand-made felt, textiles, papercuts and print-making, revisiting and developing design ideas using a variety of techniques and media. Working from my own sketches and photos Iím inspired by the varied coast and countryside of Norfolk, overgrown unkempt gardens, birds and the rich colour and chaos of domestic life.

Tania Fiorentini
I have lived in North Norfolk all my life. I love our County. I loved Artclass at school but since then until being made redundant ten years ago, I never got time to even think about doing any artwork. Eight years ago, an advert about art classes made me want to go and get started. Clemintina Sutton was the teacher. I joined her art class at Holt. I have learned so much from Tina, over the past seven years I have used different mediums. Tina's class moved from Holt to Hempton a few years later. After Tina's retirement last December, our group of twenty are still together. Known as Artists on the Green.

Terry Draper
Terry <b>Draper I am a failed art student, (Sheffield and Liverpool Art Colleges, 1969-72), who fell into Building Surveying and couldn't find a way out until retirement two years ago. At Art College I went down the Fine Art path whereas in hindsight I should have followed Graphic Design, as my brain only seems to function in two dimensions, (hence the beauty of plan drawing!) The camera for me offers a two dimension view of things and keeps an old Norfolk man from idle thoughts.

Tricia Arnold
I attended St Martin's School of Art and Goldsmiths, training to be a graphic designer. I worked for two years before getting married and moving to Exmoor. After moving back to London and whilst bringing up my children, I painted quite a lot of children's murals in London and even whilst on holiday in California visiting my sister. I taught children's mural painting at Richmond Adult College. Although I always tried to carry on with something artistic, drawing and painting, designing my own tapestry kits and silk painting. It wasn't until I moved to Holt that I finally had time to commit to painting and my love of colour. It was very exciting to exhibit as part of the Norfolk Open Studios and as part of the Holt Festival this year. Also to be able to exhibit here as part of the Hempstead Exhibition.
