Alison VarleyTrained at Brighton Art College and the Royal College of Art Alison set up her studio workshop in Norfolk in 1980. Her work has been shown widely in galleries and exhibitions in London and across the country. Initially specialising in techniques of metal inlay she now works primarily in silver and gold with an emphasis on exploring many different characteristics that can be found within the metals and their juxtaposition. The use of strong lines and contrasting textures is a feature of her work. She is happy to work to commission both large and small and to discuss design ideas within the framework of her style. Her most recent major commission was to make a carved and engraved finial in silver and gold in the form of the Norfolk Coat of Arms for the top of the Under Sheriff of Norfolk's wand.

Ann UdaleDuring my working life spent in the South West of London, I studied pottery at the Richmond College of Art for a number of years. Since my retirement to North Norfolk, I have taken up painting and sketching, attending art classes and day courses. My interests extend to pottery, calligraphy, watercolour, charcoal and, most recently, creating miniatures using mixed media enhanced with fine embroidery.

Anne‑Marie Wills‑WilsonI am a self-taught pet and wildlife artist living in the beautiful North Norfolk countryside totally surrounded by the wildlife that I adore. I've always been dotty about animals and, over the years, have been owned by lots of pets: dogs, cats, budgies, rabbits, mice, chickens, horses and even the odd frog or two!! When I work I pay a lot of attention to fine detail which gives a natural and lifelike appearance to my portraits. The greatest compliment that I can receive about my art is if someone says that they can almost hear the animal breathing or that the fur looks so real that they want to run their fingers through it. I don't just want to paint a beautiful animal, I also want to capture its personality too. Each portrait takes many hours of work and I use the highest quality pastel pencils, soft pastel sticks and paper to achieve the best results.

Chas ListerChas studied Graphic Design during the 70s at Hope Street Art College in Liverpool. He then began a long career as an Art Director and later Creative Director at a number of London agencies. In recent years he worked for ITV as an Advertising Creative Director. He has lived in Norfolk for some 18 years. Now retired Chas has more time for painting and illustration. "I'm figurative in my approach and my paintings are in essence graphic interpretations of what I see: a slightly heightened realism or, at least, my presentation of reality."

Chris CarrickI began my glass career designing and making windows for friends, neighbours and relatives. Although I enjoyed it, I found that working with lead was very messy and the process was hard work, so when I discovered glass fusing I was an immediate convert ñ lots of designing but no lead, no heavy windows and much less glass waste. I have made all sorts of things in fused glass, most of them useful items for around the house, such as plates, candle holders, and soap dishes. I have very recently started making jewellery, which I did not expect to be able to do. My dexterity is impaired due to my Parkinson's and making jewellery is very fiddly. But it is enjoyable, especially using the dichroic glass, which is full of surprises.

Chris WhiteChris has had no formal art training although excelled in art and technical drawing. He trained as a mechanic servicing all kinds of office machinery working in the City of London. Later he turned his attention to the electrical retail trade. He moved to Norfolk in 1991 to run his own grocery/newsagent shop and post office. After ten years he sold on this business to pursue his love of glass crafting. As a trained and qualified adult education tutor he has seen many of his students take up this fascinating and rewarding craft all producing excellent work. Chris exhibits his work with the National Trust and numerous other private gardens. He exhibits his work every year as part of the North Norfolk Open Studios event.

David LongdenMy first job was in a lab producing swatches for a textile printing company. This led me towards a successful career in the Dying and Finishing world - a career which provided for my family (three children) for around 30 years. At which point I changed course completely. With the help of a skilled carpenter I set up a bespoke furniture company. This was, at last, the Real Me: free to create and design in wood. Now, although retired, I still love using a lathe and trying different techniques.

Doreen HebronOnce upon a time, many years ago, and a long way from here - I graduated from the much loved and ill-fated Glasgow School of Art. I have toiled gainfully as a graphic designer and illustrator ever since those halcyon days. Now, however, I find myself trawling back to the foundation years trying to re-discover the compulsion to paint that got me to GSA in the first place and helped me through the duration of the course albeit with the advice of one of my eminent tutors ringing temptingly in my ears - 'Try having a whisky before coming into the painting class Miss S'.

Norfolk, with its myriad of wonderful land and seascapes enthrall me, as do my feline friends. Using acrylic, ink and paint is my preferred medium. What a wonderful life!

Gilli SandsI believe I was born with a pencil in my hand - for as long as I can remember I have drawn and painted. I come from an artistic/musical family: my brother sings; I paint; and our mother played several musical instruments. I am predominately left handed and proud of it. I have no formal training. I am inspired by the beautiful Glaven Valley where I live with my patterdale terrier Nib. Over the years I have been seen wondering the pathways and fields always with a dog or two at my heel. For me to draw is a need my palm itches when I see something I want to draw or paint.

Hilldred HarmanI have been painting for many years as an amateur, experimenting in many different mediums. Having lived in Lincolnshire for many years I was inspired by the fabulous skies, the dawns and sunsets. Watercolours were ideal for this, which I mainly concentrate on now. Now living in North Norfolk, I enjoy outdoor painting, the light and the charm as well as now experimenting with patterns. More of my work is on my website.

Isabel NewtonI am a Yorkshire lass who studied art and sciences then graduated (BSC Hons Leicester) in genetics. Since moving to North Norfolk in 1982 I have found time to develop my life-long fascination with colour and form. My exploration of this response has been stimulated by further study - recently often resulting in varying levels of abstraction. The tension between process and outcome can be exhilarating and exhausting - my journey in art continues...

Jane BygraveJane has been an active potter for about thirty years, supplying local galleries and other retail outlets. Although Jane makes functional stoneware, she is especially fascinated by the drama and spontaneity of the Japanese Raku technique of ceramics, which represents a significant proportion of her decorative work. She currently concentrates on making small-batch production of tableware in stoneware and porcelain and creating individual pieces, taking inspiration from anything and everything around her - from textile surface design to the forms of ancient and contemporary ceramics and is especially influenced by the surrounding landscape and East Anglian coastline. Examples of more work can be seen on her website.

Karen HarrisI have always enjoyed art in various forms but it wasn't until I retired to North Norfolk that I was able to spend more time painting. Keri LoweI have always made something, ever since I was a child. I enjoy the freedom of flitting from one medium to another and love to try everything new. My passions are working with clay, felt and textiles and papier-mache but that may be because there's other things I haven't tried yet! I don't really have inspired ideas... I just have to fulfill urges which is why there never seems to be a thread to anything I do.

Kirsty O'Leary‑LeesonOriginally I trained as an illustrator and worked in publishing, however after having spent some time raising more children than is really sensible I decided to escape the Playground Mafia and returned to Art college to study Fine Art. I graduated with a First Class degree in 2011 from Norwich University of the Arts. Since then I have exhibited widely in my home county of Norfolk as well as London and across the UK. I have been a finalist in the International Saatchi Drawing Showdown, featured in series 2 of the BBC 2 Programme 'Show Me the Monet' and was Visual Art Traderís Artist of the Month, they wrote of my work: 'The senses of emotional uncertainty, of time evaporating and of forgotten memories in Kirsty's drawings are made all the more powerful by the beautiful and precise execution of the images.' I have work in public and private collections in London, New York, the UK, the US, and the Middle East. My work is now far better travelled than I am.

Liz ChristensenAt present I am mainly figurative in my approach, but do enjoy the abstract qualities that watercolour produces. My work in this medium is fairly free and loose. This conveys the qualities I am trying to achieve in my paintings. The dry point studies are more confined, but still, I hope, have a freedom about them.

Mary RichardsonMy love of wildlife has been a constant throughout my life and since taking up sculpting, I find it has inspired me again. My love of animals has turned out to be my preferred subject and I endeavour to capture them in a loose style, using different textures to represent the essence of the animal, hopefully achieving movement and feeling. My pieces are cast in resin using bronze in the cold-cast method, as well as marble, iron and aluminium. All work being hand finished and cast by me to ensure the integrity of the piece.

Mavis LambertI am a self-taught amateur artist living in North Norfolk. I started painting many years ago but then life took over and now after a gap of twenty five years I have rekindled my passion. My painting is very different now: I love to look for colour and patterns in everything especially Norfolk flints, old wooden doors, rust and decay. My work is mostly watercolour but occasionally I will use mixed media. All my paintings are done from my own images, imagination (or a mixture of both) or outside in the fresh Norfolk air.

Merry HartI am self taught and have been painting for only a few years mainly in oil but I also love pastels and have dabbled with acrylics. Seascapes and landscapes are my favourite subjects and occasionally a wild animal or two. Returning to Sheringham after living here as a child has been a delight. It has made me determined to get outside and paint on the beach and in the countryside as well as from photos and from my imagination.

Mike ThodySince early childhood art and design have been part of my life. After retiring early from my career as a building surveyor, I chose to take a degree in fine art (painting and sculpture) at Hertfordshire University. In 2002 we moved to North Norfolk and I was lucky to have a garden studio to continue my work painting in oils, watercolour and pastels and making sculpture. In 2003 I started making sculpture in Holt Country Park using found materials and timber supplied by North Norfolk District Council. In 2008 I started a small charcoal drawing class in Hempstead at the village hall to inspire new artists. Having concentrated on watercolour painting inspired by North-Norfolk churches, country side, sea and boats for the last few years, my current work explores the use of charcoal and pastel.

Paul BurnhamI am originally from Norfolk and served an apprenticeship working on all aspects of photography before changing career to wildlife conservation. I have combined these interests using photographs of wildlife and the countryside to illustrate lectures, books and magazine articles. I was a traditional photographer, using darkroom techniques with film and chemicals to produce black and white images but recently changed to digital techniques to interpret the wild landscape and its people. Having lived in various regions of England, Wales and France I have returned to my home in Norfolk where I am enjoying photographing the East Anglian landscape again. I have exhibited in galleries in England and France.

Robert DunsterI am a Potter by inclination, but an engineer by training, from a family with a tradition of craftsmanship in wood and metal, though from an engineering rather than artistic perspective. My interest in hand-made ceramics goes back to childhood, having been introduced to the tradition during family holidays in Cornwall. I have been producing ceramics for over 20 years, currently from a private studio in West Beckham, Norfolk. My main interest is in functional stoneware, with the aim of producing useable pots that 'sit in the hand' and rely on form, texture and the gestural application of glazes rather than explicit decoration. My glazes are influenced by the Anglo-Japanese tradition, and are intended to reflect the changing effects of light on water, foliage and landscape by the use of deep glazes that are affected by ambient lighting. Since moving to Norfolk I have been using local materials, particularly ash from thatching reeds, investigating how these can be used in a way that replicates the chemistry involved in wood firing.

Roger TidmanI owe much of my love of nature to my primary school teacher in the small Cambridgeshire village of Barrington, further encouraged by my supportive parents. Earliest Wildlife awards stemmed from this time, when at the age of nine I won the first of two silver medals for ëBird and Treeí studies, a National Competition run by the RSPB. This must have fuelled my taste for success to the detriment of more formal learning, although I did manage a place at Aston University to study Ophthalmic Optics, a prelude to my earlier career as an Optometrist. Moving to Norfolk in 1979 I began the precarious alternative life of Wildlife Photography, a decision Iíve never regretted, although I did have to wait nearly two years for my first cheque! Since those early days, my work has been accepted by agents including Getty Images, FLPA and the RSPB. Extensive travel increased the variety of material and satisfied my wanderlust with such exotic destinations such as Antarctica, China, India, Peru, Brazil, much of Africa and Europe, where Central Spain remains a favourite destination. Various awards followed from home and abroad, to include winning the prestigious British Birds competition a record four times and an RSPB Winter Birds competition. Many of my photographs have been published in books, magazines, calendars and promotional material.

Ros CoppingI was born in London and moved to a small village in Cambridgeshire when I was 8 which had a profound effect on the way I observe a sense of place. Missing the diversity and cultural circus made me reflective and joining a small but jolly community in a flat land with huge skies made me expressive and curious. Following an Art Foundation Course in Cambridge I went on to study Graphic Design and Illustration at Newport School of Art in Gwent and then on to an MA in Birmingham focusing on Illustration and Print-Making and specifically reportage Illustration of ordinary people. I trained at Cambridge University to become an Art Teacher and am passionate about Art Education being playful and fun and the engagement with practical Art within the community. I enjoy travelling especially to the North; Norway and Iceland and am enchanted by the North Sea. Having been a Teacher and practicing Artist for 22 years I moved to the North Norfolk Coast two years ago to focus more fully on continuing and developing my own understanding of how people live, and how I can record times places and memories. I spend my afternoons and evenings out and about walking catching ëglimpsesí. I think of myself as very lucky to have been able to draw and paint all my life and earn my living by being creative and practical.

Su SummersA retirement promise was to learn something new. It turned out to be more than one 'something', starting with learning to play the harp, and then by learning to work with glass. Both have been a challenge, but immensely satisfying. I love the natural world and my work in glass usually reflects this.

Terry DraperI am a failed art student, (Sheffield and Liverpool Art Colleges, 1969-72), who fell into Building Surveying and couldnít find a way out until retirement two years ago. At Art College I went down the Fine Art path whereas in hindsight I should have followed Graphic Design, as my brain only seems to function in two dimensions, (hence the beauty of plan drawing!) The camera for me offers a two dimension view of things and keeps an old Norfolk man from idle thoughts.
